Early Life and Education
Melquíades Álvarez was born into a humble family in Oviedo, Spain. He pursued legal studies at the University of Oviedo, establishing a foundation for his future career in politics and law.
Journalism and Legal Career
During his youth, Álvarez was actively involved in journalism, establishing the newspaper "La Libertad." He also worked as a lawyer in Oviedo, rising to the position of president of the local bar association from 1894 to 1898.
Political Activism
Álvarez entered the political arena in 1898 as a member of the Liberal Party. He later joined the Republican Union, aligning himself with Nicolás Salmerón. In 1912, he founded and led the Reformist Party, which included prominent liberal intellectuals such as Manuel Azaña and José Ortega y Gasset. The party advocated for the establishment of a republic in Spain while remaining open to accepting a constitutional monarchy.
Rhetorical Brilliance
Álvarez was renowned as a gifted orator, earning him the nicknames "El Tribuno" and "pico de oro" (golden-tongued). His fiery speeches captivated audiences and influenced political discourse.
Parliamentary Service
Álvarez was repeatedly elected as a deputy to the Cortes, the Spanish parliament. He played a significant role in the movement demanding the convocation of a Constituent Cortes in 1917. Later, he adopted a more moderate stance, aligning with the monarchist Liberal Party. From 1922 to 1923, he served as President of the Cortes.
Resistance to Dictatorship
After the military coup led by General Miguel Primo de Rivera, Álvarez unsuccessfully urged King Alfonso XIII to restore liberal parliamentarism. During the dictatorship, he participated in plots against the regime.
Republican Years
With the proclamation of the Spanish Republic in 1931, Álvarez was elected to the Cortes again in 1931 and 1933. He led the small center-right Republican Liberal Democratic Party, which opposed the Popular Front coalition. He also served as Dean of the Madrid Bar Association.
Legal Representation and Assassination
In 1936, Álvarez served as the defense attorney for José Antonio Primo de Rivera, leader of the Spanish Falange, who was arrested by the Popular Front government. A month after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in August 1936, Álvarez was arrested by Republican authorities and executed by leftist military officers along with several other conservative politicians and military figures. The tragedy left a profound mark on Spain and served as a reminder of the brutality of the conflict.
