Early Life and Education
Merkurii Sergeevich Gilyarovwas born in Kyiv, Ukraine, on February 22, 1912 (March 6, according to the Gregorian calendar). His family was renowned for its exceptional nobility and integrity. Gilyarov graduated from Kyiv State University in 1933, where he studied under the zoologist and comparative anatomist Professor M. M. Voskoboinikov. His diploma thesis was reviewed by the distinguished evolutionist Professor I. I. Schmalhausen.
Career
After graduation, Gilyarov worked in agricultural institutions in Ukraine before moving to Moscow in 1936. From 1938-1944, he headed the Department of Plant Protection at the All-Union Institute of Rubber Plants. From 1944-1955, he was a senior research associate at the Institute of Evolutionary Morphology and Ecology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Simultaneously, he served as a professor at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute named after V. I. Lenin (later Moscow State Pedagogical University) from 1949-1978.
Research Contributions
Gilyarov established a new branch of biology: soil zoology. In 1939, he published two landmark articles in the journal "Pochvovedeniye" that laid the foundation for this field: "Soil Fauna and Soil Life" and "Influence of Soil Conditions on the Fauna of Soil Pests."
Gilyarov's research focused on developing pest control measures, understanding the role of animals in soil formation, and studying the evolution of insects and other arthropods. He developed systematic methods for diagnosing soils based on their zoological characteristics and created a unique "Key to Soil-Dwelling Insect Larvae" with a team of authors.
Academic Recognition
Gilyarov was elected a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1974 and served as the editor-in-chief of the "Journal of General Biology." He was a member of the Presidium and head of the Soil Biology section of the All-Union Society of Soil Scientists. He was also a member of the Expert Commission on Biology from 1951-1975.
Legacy
Gilyarov passed away in Moscow on March 2, 1985, and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery. A memorial plaque commemorates his contributions on the building of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution in Moscow. His legacy as the founder of soil zoology continues to inspire generations of scientists.
