Early Life and EducationBernard Altum was born on January 31, 1824, in Münster, Westphalia, Germany. He initially pursued studies in theology and philology in Münster and Berlin before turning his attention to natural sciences.
Teaching Career
In 1856, Altum began his teaching career as an instructor at a secondary school in Münster. Three years later, he became a lecturer in zoology at the University of Münster. In 1869, he was appointed professor at the Eberswalde Forest Academy.
Contributions to Zoology
During his tenure at the Eberswalde Forest Academy, Altum conducted extensive research on the behavior and physiology of wild animals, particularly birds. His observations and insights contributed significantly to the understanding of forest ecology and animal biology.
Later Life and Legacy
Altum retired from teaching in 1894 and spent his remaining years in Eberswalde. He passed away on February 1, 1900, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering zoologist and educator. His work continues to influence modern ornithology and wildlife management.
