Born Mary Louise Streep on June 22, 1949, in Summit, New Jersey, she grew up in a family that didn't plan on having children. Despite feeling insecure about her appearance, Streep discovered her love for performing at a young age. She excelled in school plays and eventually pursued her passion for acting at Vassar College, where she received her bachelor's degree in 1971. She continued her education at the Yale School of Drama, earning a master's degree in 1975.
