Early Life and Education
Mher Margaryan was born on November 4, 1974, in Yerevan, Armenia. In 1996, he earned a degree in International Relations History and Theory from Yerevan State University's Faculty of International Relations. He later pursued his graduate studies in the university's Department of Modern History and completed the "Intensive Studies in International Relations" program at Tufts University's Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in the United States.
Diplomatic Career
Margaryan's diplomatic career began in 1998 with his appointment as an attaché in the UN Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia. He progressively rose through the ranks, serving as a third secretary (2000-2001) and second secretary (2001-2004) at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the United Nations in New York City.
From 2006 to 2009, Margaryan served as first secretary at the Embassy of Armenia in London. Upon his return to Armenia, he headed the European Union Department within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2009-2015).
International Appointments
In 2015, Margaryan was appointed Minister Plenipotentiary at Armenia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland. He subsequently served as Deputy Permanent Representative at Armenia's Mission to the UN in New York (2017-2018).
Permanent Representative to the United Nations
In August 2018, Margaryan was appointed as Armenia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, a position he continues to hold. During his tenure, he has held significant leadership roles, including Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2020 and Chair of the 64th and 65th sessions of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (2019-2021).
