Academician Mikhail Dzhrbashyan
Early Life and EducationMikhail Dzhrbashyan was an Armenian mathematician known for his contributions to theory of functions, harmonic analysis, and approximation theory. He was born in Armenia and pursued his studies at the Yerevan State University from 1936 to 1941.
Scientific and Pedagogical Career
Dzhrbashyan began his scientific and pedagogical activities at Yerevan State University and the Armenian Academy of Sciences in 1942. In 1945, he defended his PhD thesis, which focused on the representability of analytic functions. He earned his doctoral degree in 1949 from Moscow State University with a dissertation on metric theorems for the completeness and representability of analytic functions.
Academician and Institution Builder
In 1953, Dzhrbashyan was elected a corresponding member of the Armenian Academy of Sciences. Three years later, he became a full member. From 1957 to 1960, he served as the dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Yerevan State University. He later headed the Department of Theory of Functions from 1978 to 1994.
Dzhrbashyan played a significant role in shaping the Armenian scientific community. He was the chief editor of the journal "Mathematics" from its inception in 1966. In 1971, he became the director of the newly established Institute of Mathematics at the Armenian Academy of Sciences, which he led until 1989. The institute and Dzhrbashyan's own students have contributed significantly to the development of mathematics in Armenia.
Research Interests and Publications
Dzhrbashyan's research interests included theory of functions, harmonic analysis, and approximation theory. He published numerous scientific papers, textbooks, and monographs, including "Integral Transforms and Representations of Functions in the Complex Domain" (1966), "Classes and Boundary Properties of Functions Meromorphic in the Circle" (1993), and "Harmonic Analysis and Boundary Value Problems in the Complex Domain" (1993).
