Biography of Mikhail Alexandrovich
Mikhail Alexandrovich was a Latvian and Soviet singer who was born on July 10, 1914, in the village of Birzhi, now known as Berzpils in the Balvi region of Latvia. He was born into a Jewish family of small traders.
Early Career and Success
In the 1920s, Alexandrovich gained popularity as a child prodigy. At the age of nine, he toured Eastern European cities and Germany, performing Jewish folk songs in Yiddish, romances, arias in Russian and German, and other non-child repertoire. He was accompanied by composer and pianist O.D. Strok. He completed his education at the Latvian Conservatory and trained in Italy under B. Ghili.
Choir Cantor and Recordings
During the 1930s, Alexandrovich worked as a cantor in synagogues in Manchester, Riga, and Kaunas. In 1940, he moved to the USSR and became a chamber singer. In the USSR, he released seventy records with a total circulation of twenty-two million copies.
Later Years and Legacy
From 1971, Alexandrovich lived in Israel and, from 1974, in the United States. In 1990, he moved to Germany, where he spent the rest of his life. He continued to work as a cantor, performed solo concerts on five continents, and recorded albums and CDs. He also published a memoir titled "I Remember..." in 1985.
Mikhail Alexandrovich enjoyed immense success and acclaim from both the public and critics throughout his 75-year career. He passed away on July 3, 2002, in Munich.
