Biography of Michael Christie

Michael Christie is an American conductor who gained international recognition in 1995 when he was awarded a special prize for "outstanding potential" at the First International Sibelius Conductor's Competition in Helsinki. At that time, Michael was only 21 years old. He was born in Buffalo, New York and received his education at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, specializing in the trumpet. He was trained in conducting by Peter Jaffe, Eiji Oue, and Robert Spano.

Early Career

Shortly after receiving the prize, Michael became an apprentice conductor at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he had the opportunity to work with renowned conductor Daniel Barenboim in both Chicago and the Berlin State Opera. From 1996 to 1998, Christie served as an assistant conductor at the Helsinki Philharmonic, and from 1997 to 1998, he worked at the Zurich Opera.

Colorado Music Festival

In 2000, Christie became the music director of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder. In 2011, it was announced that he would continue to work in Boulder for at least five more years.

Phoenix Symphony

In December 2004, Christie was appointed as the 10th music director of the Phoenix Symphony. Initially, he signed a five-year contract from 2005 to 2010, but in February 2008, it was announced that the contract would be extended until 2015. However, in 2012, the orchestra's management announced their separation from Michael Christie.

Brooklyn Philharmonic

In August 2005, Christie became the music director of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, signing a three-year contract. In September 2007, the contract was extended until 2010, but no further extension was made.

Minnesota Opera

In January 2012, representatives from the Minnesota Opera hired Michael Christie for at least one season.

Personal Life

Michael Christie is married to Alexis, a physician, and they have a daughter together.
