Biography of Michael Corleone

Michael Corleone, a fictional character, is the main protagonist in Mario Puzo's novels "The Godfather" and "Sicilian" and the film series "The Godfather" directed by Francis Ford Coppola. He is the youngest son of mafia don Vito Corleone and his wife Carmela. Michael grew up with his two older brothers, Santino and Fredrico, his younger sister Constanzia, and his unofficial "foster brother" Tom Hagen.

A Shift in Fate

Unlike his brothers, Michael had no interest in the family business; he was drawn to a normal life as an honest citizen. His father, however, had dreams of him becoming an honest politician. After the start of the war, Michael dropped out of college and joined the Marine Corps, where he served with great distinction and earned a medal for bravery. After being discharged, he returned home and continued his education in college.

A Dark Path

After an assassination attempt on Vito Corleone's life, Michael was reluctantly drawn into the family business. He proved his loyalty to his father by personally taking revenge on two rival mobsters. For two years, Michael hid in Sicily, where he fell in love and got married. Unfortunately, his wife was killed in an attempt on Michael's life. Seeking vengeance, Michael returned to the United States and became his father's right-hand man, dealing serious blows to their enemies. He also reconciled with his former love interest, Kay Adams, married her, and became a father of two children.

Assuming Leadership

After Vito Corleone retired, Michael became the de facto head of the Corleone crime family. With ruthless efficiency, he eliminated all his enemies, including those who betrayed the family. The second film depicts Michael's rise to national notoriety. His attempts to legitimize the family business failed partially due to his own character. Michael faced new assassination attempts and suspected his business partner Hyman Roth, who secretly desired control over all the Cuban casinos. The government became interested in Michael, as the Senate initiated an investigation into his activities, gathering evidence and recruiting witnesses. Michael was also concerned about the presence of a traitor within his own family and eventually discovered that his older brother Fredo had betrayed him. The conflict in Cuba ended in failure, but Michael did not forget or forgive his enemies. He dealt with his brother after their mother's death to spare her the pain, and he managed to eliminate Roth as well. Kay, unable to bear the truth about her husband's actions, attempted to leave him, leading Michael to banish her from their home and keep their children.

Continued Struggles

In the third film, Michael continued his attempts to legitimize the family business. He gradually distanced himself from criminal sources of income, improved relations with the Vatican, and conducted various charitable activities. Michael even reconciled with Kay, who revealed that their son Anthony was not interested in inheriting his father's business. Michael's connections with the Vatican helped him gain control over the company "Immobiliare," and he found a new successor to his business in his nephew Vincent Mancini. However, similar to his father Sonny, Vincent was impulsive and aggressive, and his romantic involvement with Michael's daughter Mary greatly concerned the don. The situation became further complicated by new assassination attempts on Michael's life. He quickly identified Don Altobello as the organizer behind these attacks. The shock triggered a diabetic episode and a stroke, leaving Michael incapacitated. His sister, who assumed practical control of the family, ordered Vincent to take revenge on one of the attackers. When Michael recovered, he sent Vincent to infiltrate the enemy's family. Afterward, he traveled to Sicily, where he witnessed his son's opera debut and finally made peace with his wife. The deal with "Immobiliare" turned out to be a complex conspiracy involving church officials. Striving to salvage what he could, Michael sought Cardinal Lamberto's help. Unexpectedly, he decided to confess for the first time in 30 years, overwhelmed by the weight of his sins. The cardinal acknowledged Michael's chance for redemption but was soon killed by conspirators within the church's financial sector. Fulfilling his vow not to sin again, Michael retired and appointed his nephew Vincent as the new head of the family. Vincent eliminated all remaining enemies, but one of the assassins fatally wounded Michael's daughter Mary, shattering his heart and marriage. The former don died in solitude in Sicily.
