Michael Dertuzos: Pioneer of Computer Science
Michael Dertuzos was a renowned computer scientist and the director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) from 1974 to 2001.
Early Life and Education
Born in Athens, Greece, Dertuzos completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Athens before pursuing graduate studies at the University of Arkansas as a Fulbright Scholar. In 1964, he earned his doctorate from MIT and joined the faculty the same year.
Pioneering Innovation at LCS
As director of LCS, Dertuzos spearheaded numerous groundbreaking innovations, including:
- RSA encryption
- NuBus system bus- X Window System
- Internet
He played a pivotal role in establishing and incorporating the World Wide Web Consortium into MIT. Additionally, he supported the GNU Project and the Free Software Foundation.
Entrepreneurial Endeavors
In 1968, Dertuzos co-founded Computek, Inc., a manufacturer of oscilloscopes and intelligent terminals.
Legacy and Honors
Dertuzos passed away in 2001 and was buried in the First Cemetery of Athens. On November 5, 2018, Google honored him with a Doodle on his birthday. His contributions to computer science have left an enduring legacy, shaping the way we use and interact with technology today.
