Early Life and Military Career

Oleg Gavrilyuk was born on October 19, 1952, in the village of Slooboda-Yaltukhovskya, Ukraine. In 1970, he graduated from the Republican Specialized Boarding School for Physical Education in Kyiv. That same year, he enrolled in the Black Sea Higher Naval School named after P. S. Nakhimov in Sevastopol, where he studied radio engineering systems for anti-submarine guided missiles.

Upon graduation in 1975, Gavrilyuk began his military service in the Pacific Fleet. He served in various positions, including commander of an anti-aircraft missile battery, group commander on a patrol ship, and assistant commander on a patrol ship. From 1980 to 1985, he commanded a patrol ship.

Naval Service with the Soviet Union and Ukraine

In 1985, Gavrilyuk attended the Naval Order of Lenin, October Revolution, and Ushakov Academy named after Marshal of the Soviet Union A. A. Grechko. After graduating in 1987, he was appointed chief of staff of the Anti-Submarine Ship Brigade in the Pacific Fleet. From 1990 to 1991, he commanded the brigade and later the Anti-Submarine Ship Division of the Pacific Fleet.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Gavrilyuk joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He held several positions within the Ukrainian Navy, including deputy chief of staff, deputy commander for armament, and admiral-inspector of the Navy.

Military Leadership and Positions

From 1996 to 2001, Gavrilyuk served as Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine and Commander of the Ukrainian Navy. He was promoted to Admiral in 1998. In 2003, he became Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Navy, a position he held until 2007.

After retiring from active duty in 2007, Gavrilyuk served as an advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine and as Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. In 2010, he became Minister of Defense of Ukraine, a position he held until 2012.

Civilian Career and Personal Life

Following his retirement from government, Gavrilyuk entered the civilian sector. He earned a Master's degree in Public Administration and was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree.

Gavrilyuk is married and has two children. His hobbies include sports, tennis, and sailing.
