Early Life and Education
Michael Griffin was born on November 1, 1949. He holds degrees from six different universities, including a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Doctorate in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
NASA Career
Griffin first joined NASA in the 1990s as the agency's Chief Engineer. In this role, he played a key role in the development of the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. After leaving NASA, Griffin became the Vice President of Orbital Sciences, a NASA contractor.
Return to NASA
In 2005, Griffin was appointed as the Administrator of NASA, succeeding Sean O'Keefe. As Administrator, he oversaw the agency's efforts to return the Space Shuttle to flight after the Columbia disaster and to develop new technologies for human spaceflight.
Space Exploration Advocate
Griffin is a strong advocate for human space exploration and has led efforts to develop a roadmap for future missions to the Moon and Mars. He believes that exploring space is essential for advancing scientific knowledge and inspiring future generations.
Other Interests
Outside of his work at NASA, Griffin is an avid golfer, skier, and scuba diver. He also holds a pilot's license and is a licensed amateur radio operator.
