Tim Samaras was an American engineer and storm chaser, best known for his research on tornadoes. He was born and raised in Lakewood, Colorado. At the age of six, Tim watched the classic movie "The Wizard of Oz," which left a strong impression on him, particularly the power of the tornado that swept Dorothy away to the Land of Oz. This sparked his interest in storms, and he began hunting real tornadoes at the age of 30, driven by scientific curiosity rather than thrills.
Research on Tornadoes
Tim Samaras conducted his storm chasing expeditions as part of the field research group called "TWISTEX" (Tactical Weather Instrumented Sampling in Tornadoes Experiment). The project, created by Samaras himself, aimed to thoroughly study and better understand the principles and causes of tornado formation. Most of Samaras' research was sponsored by National Geographic, and he received a total of 18 grants for his studies. He used homemade instruments, including unique probes and sensors, to gather data from the most severe and dangerous tornadoes, allowing for a better understanding of the internal structure of these terrifying vortexes.
Contributions to Meteorology
Tim Samaras' research significantly contributed to the advancement of modern meteorology. His findings helped simplify the process of predicting and forecasting tornado behavior, as acknowledged by Eileen O'Neill, the president of Discovery Networks. Samaras also had a keen interest in other storm-related phenomena, such as lightning.
Tragic Loss
In 2013, while chasing a tornado, Tim Samaras tragically lost his life, along with his 24-year-old son Paul and his colleague Carl Young. The tornado that killed them had a record-breaking width of approximately 4.2 kilometers. The cause of their deaths was a combination of factors, including a sudden change in the tornado's direction and a blocked road. Although storm chasing is known to be dangerous, Samaras was the first storm chaser to die in the line of duty. His untimely death has prompted many of his colleagues to reconsider their approach to tracking storms, highlighting the unpredictable nature of tornadoes.
