Michael Konsel: A Legendary Austrian Goalkeeper
Early Career and Vienna SuccessMichael Konsel embarked on his football journey in Vienna, Austria. After honing his skills at the Vienna Football School, he debuted with the "First" club before joining "Rapid" in 1985. With Rapid, Konsel celebrated two Austrian championships and reached the 1984/85 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final, ultimately losing to Everton.
Captaincy and European Finals
Konsel spent an impressive 12 years with Rapid, captaining the team for the last two seasons. In 1996, he again graced the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final, but this time, PSG proved too strong for the Austrian outfit.
Italian Adventure and Career Climax
At the age of 35, Konsel ventured into Italy and joined Roma. During his season there, he was acclaimed as the "Goalkeeper of the Year." Following an injury, he decided to close out his career in Venice.
International Debut and World Cup Appearances
Konsel debuted for the Austrian national team in 1985 and went on to make 43 appearances. He represented Austria in two World Cups. In August 1998, he bid farewell to international football in a match against France, handing the torch to Franz Wohlfahrt, who made his debut in that game.
