Education and Academic Career
Mihail Kostiuk graduated from the Novogrudok Pedagogical School and the Faculty of History and Philology at the Grodno Pedagogical Institute (now Grodno State University). In 1966, he enrolled in the postgraduate program at the Institute of History of the BSSR Academy of Sciences, where he researched the labor activity of collective farmers from 1933-1940 under the supervision of Ivan Sergeevich Kravchenko. Kostiuk defended his candidate's dissertation in 1969.
Administrative Roles
Kostiuk's early career included appointments as scientific secretary of the Institute of History of the BSSR Academy of Sciences in 1970 and scientific secretary of the Institute of Party History under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus in 1975. In 1979, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation with Illarion Metodievich Ignatenko as his scientific consultant.
Leadership at the Institute of History
Kostiuk became the deputy director for scientific work at the Institute of History of the BSSR Academy of Sciences in 1981 and was appointed director in 1988, a position he held until 1999. In 1989, he was elected a corresponding member of the BSSR Academy of Sciences.
Awards and Honors
On September 8, 2010, Kostiuk was awarded the Francis Skorina Medal for his many years of fruitful work and high professionalism.
Publications and Legacy
Kostiuk is the author of over 250 scientific works, including four individual monographs and more than 10 collective monographs. He also edited the comprehensive works "Essays on the History of Belarus" and "History of Belarus: In 6 Volumes." Under Kostiuk's guidance, two doctors of science and 19 candidates of science were prepared to defend their dissertations.
