Biography of Michael Martin
Michael John Martin was born in 1945 in Glasgow, Scotland, to a family of a ship's stoker and a school cleaner, who had five children. Unable to finish secondary school, the 16-year-old Michael had to start working at a steelworks, where he later joined the trade union movement.
In 1967, he joined the Labour Party and began his parliamentary career in 1979, working in the Trade and Industry Committee. After the Labour Party's victory in the 1997 elections, he became the Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.
Michael Martin's distinctive character traits include straightforwardness and firmness of judgment. It is these traits that explain his active opposition to bills on the liberalization of homosexuality and abortions, which were supported by the government. However, his friends know him as a balanced, honest, and pleasant person to communicate with.
He only received higher education in 1987, specializing in "Italian Language." His love for Romance culture is combined with his passion for Scottish national music. He is an excellent player of the bagpipes.
