Biography of Michael Martin Hammer
Michael Martin Hammer, an American engineer and author in the field of management, was one of the founders of the theory of business process reengineering. He was born on April 13, 1948, in Annapolis, Maryland. As a child who survived the Holocaust, he grew up in Annapolis. He and his wife, Phyllis Thurm Hammer, lived in Newton, Massachusetts, along with their four children, Jessica, Allison, Dana, and David.
Education and Academic Career
Hammer, who was an engineer by education, had a deep interest in business management. He obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS), and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968, 1970, and 1973, respectively. He became a professor at MIT in the Department of Computer Science and also taught at the MIT Sloan School of Management. His works were published in prestigious business publications such as Harvard Business Review and The Economist.
Achievements and Recognition
Michael Hammer was recognized as one of the "25 Most Influential Americans in Business" by Time magazine. His book, "Reengineering the Corporation: A manifesto for Business Revolution," co-authored with James A. Champy and edited by Donna Sammons Carpenter, is considered one of the "three most important business books in the last 20 years" according to Forbes magazine. "Reengineering the Corporation" sold 2.5 million copies and remained on The New York Times bestseller list for over a year. In addition to this book, Hammer wrote "The Reengineering Revolution" in 1995, "Beyond Reengineering" in 1997, and "Agenda" in 2001.
Legacy
Michael Hammer passed away on September 3, 2008. He is buried at the Baker Street Jewish Cemeteries in Boston.
