Michael Packard, a 56-year-old diver, miraculously survived after being trapped inside the mouth of a humpback whale off the coast of Cape Cod. While lobstering 45 feet below the surface, Packard felt a sudden force and was engulfed in darkness.
Inside the Whale's Jaws
Packard initially believed he had been attacked by a shark, but the absence of pain revealed the true nature of his predicament. He spent approximately 30 seconds inside the whale's mouth, breathing from his oxygen tank and desperately kicking and punching.
Rescued from the Belly of the Beast
Miraculously, the whale surfaced and expelled Packard from its mouth, leaving him with nothing more than a few bruises. His friend, who had been nearby in a boat, assisted in pulling him out of the water.
Biology of the Humpback Whale
Experts emphasize the rarity of such incidents. Humpback whales, known for their gentle nature, are physically incapable of swallowing humans. They lack teeth and feed on small fish or plankton, straining them through baleen plates in their mouths.
