Early Life and EducationMichael Rooker was born on April 6, 1955, in Jasper, Alabama. He has nine siblings. After his parents divorced when he was thirteen, he relocated with his mother, sisters, and brothers to Chicago, Illinois. Rooker completed his education in Chicago and attended the Goodman School of Drama, now known as The Theatre School at DePaul University, graduating in 1982.
Film and Television Debut
Rooker began his career in theater, but made his television and film debut in 1986 with the television film "Crime Story" and the movie "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer." "Henry" proved to be a pivotal project for Rooker, who was captivated by the idea of playing a psychopathic killer. His performance garnered critical acclaim, transforming him from an unknown actor to a promising talent.

Rooker's cinematic career took off after "Henry." In 2010, Rooker landed a major role in AMC's acclaimed premiere "The Walking Dead." The series, set in a zombie-infested world, became a massive success, introducing Rooker to a global audience. While his character, Merle Dixon, was not an immediate fan favorite like Rick (Andrew Lincoln) or Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), he left an unforgettable mark on the show. In the narrative, where characters were expected to collaborate against the threat of zombies, Rooker portrayed a negative figure—a drug addict, racist, and misogynist who constantly clashed with other survivors. Merle's final appearance in "The Walking Dead" came in 2013, in the Season 3 episode "This Sorrowful Life."
Guardians of the Galaxy and Beyond
Alongside his work on "The Walking Dead," Rooker continued to appear in films and television shows, including "Atlantis Down" (2011), "The Mystery" (2011), "Hypnotized" (2012), "Out of the Furnace" (2012), "Archer" (2012, 1 episode), "Brother's Keeper" (2013), "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014), "Office Uprising" (2016), "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" (2017), "SEAL Team" (2017, 1 episode), and "Robot Chicken" (2017, 1 episode). He also tried his hand at filmmaking, directing the film "The Walking Dead: The Oath" (2012).
Rooker's role in "Guardians of the Galaxy" as Yondu Udonta, an alien smuggler, catapulted him to pop culture fame. The character became even more popular in the highly anticipated sequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." Yondu's role was significantly expanded in the sequel, and he performed one of the most heroic acts in the film.

Rooker's upcoming projects include the films "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and "Bolden!" Both projects are currently in the development stage. The plot of the former remains unknown, while the latter will showcase the life of African American cornet player Charles "Buddy" Bolden (played by Gary Carr).
Personal Life
Michael Rooker has been married to his wife, Margot, since June 22, 1979. They have two daughters, Alynn and Gillian. Despite his fame, Rooker has largely avoided tabloid headlines and remains devoted to his family.
