Biography of Michael Rösch
Michael Rösch is a Belgian biathlete who achieved his main successes as a part of the German national team. He became the Olympic champion in the relay race in 2006 and won three bronze medals at the World Championships in the relay race in 2007, 2008, and 2009. Rösch also finished fifth in the overall standings of the World Cup in the 2005/2006 season. Additionally, he became a two-time world champion in summer biathlon in 2009.
Early Life and Junior Career
Michael Rösch is the son of the famous biathlete Eberhard Rösch, a three-time world champion in the relay race. Michael had a successful junior career, winning eight medals at the Junior World Championships between 2001 and 2004, including four golds and four silvers. However, he struggled to achieve the same level of success in individual races at the senior level.
Switching National Teams
In 2012, Rösch decided to compete for the Belgian national team after not being selected for the German team. However, due to difficulties in obtaining citizenship, he was forced to miss two seasons. In February 2014, there were reports of interest in Rösch from the Moldovan Biathlon Federation. They were willing to offer him Moldovan citizenship if he could not obtain all the necessary documents. However, after the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Rösch was given the opportunity to compete for Belgium.
Career Under the Belgian Flag
For the first time representing Belgium, Rösch debuted in March 2014 at an IBU Cup stage, where he finished 19th in the sprint event.
Personal Life
Michael Rösch is the son of Eberhard Rösch, a former East German biathlete who won silver and bronze medals at the 1980 Olympics. His mother's name is Barbél. Rösch has a brother named Andreas and a sister named Stefanie.
