Mikhail Tsintsadze
Early Life and EducationMikhail Tsintsadze was born into a priestly family in Georgia. He attended the Kutaisi Theological School and subsequently enrolled in the Tiflis Theological Seminary, from which he was expelled in 1886 for engaging in revolutionary propaganda.
Political Involvement
In the 1890s, Tsintsadze became actively involved in revolutionary activities. He played a key role in organizing the "Mesami-Dasi" Social Democratic organization in 1892-93. In 1897, he was arrested and exiled from the Caucasus. Upon release, he worked with the Yekaterinoslav Committee of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party (RSDLP) and contributed to the "Southern Worker" newspaper.
Imprisonment and Political Activities
Tsintsadze spent several years in prison from 1900-1902. After his release, he joined the "Caucasian Union Committee" in 1903, which was established to unite various socialist groups in the region. In 1904, he acted as a witness at the wedding of Joseph Stalin and Ekaterina Svanidze.
Participation in Revolutions and Exile
Tsintsadze represented Georgia at the 3rd Congress of the RSDLP in 1905. He was a notable participant in the 1905-1907 Revolution in Baku. In 1907, he was forced to seek exile due to political suppression.
Return to Russia and Later Career
In 1917, Tsintsadze returned to Russia with Vladimir Lenin in the famous "sealed train." He served on the Tbilisi Committee of the RSDLP(B) from 1917-1920. In 1921-22, he represented the Georgian SSR in the government of the RSFSR.
Leadership Roles and Honors
From 1923-30, Tsintsadze was Chairman of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the Georgian SSR and one of the Chairmen of the Central Executive Committee of the Transcaucasian SFSR. He also became a member of the Presidium of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR.
International Activities and Legacy
Tsintsadze was a prominent figure in the Communist International (Comintern). He served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Comintern from 1920 and the International Control Commission from 1931. He participated in various Comintern congresses and attended the 10th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 16th, and 17th Congresses of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). He was a Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR during its 1st, 2nd, and 3rd convocations.
In 1935, the district center of Senaki in the Georgian SSR was named after Tsintsadze in recognition of his contributions. He was buried in Tbilisi after his passing.
