Education and Early Career

Mykhaylo Zaharovych Zgurovsky is a Ukrainian scientist and the rector of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute". He graduated from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (1975) with a degree in "Automated Control Systems". After graduation, he worked at the university (now renamed National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute"), except for a brief period (1986-1987) when he held a position in the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of the Ukrainian SSR.

Academic Accomplishments

In 1979, Zgurovsky defended his doctoral dissertation. In 1984, he obtained his doctorate. He was appointed professor in 1987, vice-rector for educational work in 1988, and rector of the university in 1992.

Political Career

Zgurovsky served as the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine from 1994 to 1999.

Research Contributions

He is a renowned scientist in the fields of system mathematics, nonlinear analysis, and decision-making theory. His research findings have found significant applications in geophysics, geoinformatics, and sustainable development, focusing on human safety and quality of life. He has supervised the training of nine doctors and over 40 candidates of science. Zgurovsky has authored or co-authored over 300 academic papers, 30 monographs, and textbooks, and holds 40 inventions.

International Collaborations

Zgurovsky actively participates in many international scientific societies and organizations, including the Worldwide Network of Educational and Scientific Exchanges (EDNES, Strasbourg, France), the International Council of Science (ICSU, Paris, France), and the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA, Paris, France). He serves as President of the Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN, Constanta, Romania) and the Central and Eastern European Institute for Sustainable Development (CEESDI, Kyiv, Ukraine).

Awards and Recognition

Zgurovsky has received governmental awards from Ukraine, Italy, and Estonia. He is a Merited Scientist and Engineer of Ukraine (since 2000) and a recipient of the State Prizes of Ukraine (in 1990, 1999, 2004), the Victor Glushkov Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (in 1999), and the Victor Mikhalevich Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (in 2002).
