Early Life and Military Career

Mikhail Nikolaevich Sharokhin was born on December 11, 1898, in the village of Ivanovo in Russia. He joined the military in 1917 and the Red Army in 1918. He later graduated from cavalry improvement courses in 1926, the M.V. Frunze Military Academy in 1936, and the General Staff Academy in 1939.

Civil War and Early Commands

During the Russian Civil War, Sharokhin served as a platoon and squadron commander on the North-Eastern and Turkestan fronts. He also held various positions in the Red Army, including assistant commander and commander of a machine-gun squadron, and chief of the regimental school.

Rise Through the Ranks

In 1936, Sharokhin became chief of staff of a light bombing aviation brigade and later its commander in 1937. He then served as senior assistant to the head of a department and head of a department in the Operational Directorate of the General Staff from 1939 to 1940.

World War II

During the Great Patriotic War, Sharokhin served as deputy head of the Operational Directorate and later deputy chief of the General Staff from September 1941 to February 1942. He subsequently commanded the 3rd Shock Army, the North-Western Front, and the Volkhov Front.

Liberation of Ukraine

In August 1943, Sharokhin took command of the 37th Army on the Steppe, 2nd, and 3rd Ukrainian fronts. He played a key role in the liberation of the Left-Bank Ukraine.

Budapest and Vienna

From October 1944 until the end of the war, Sharokhin commanded the 57th Army on the 3rd Ukrainian Front. His army participated in the Budapest, Balaton, and Vienna operations.

Post-War Career

After the war, Sharokhin continued to command the 57th Army. He was later appointed head of the War Experience Department of the General Staff, deputy head of the Main Military-Scientific Directorate, head of the Directorate of Higher Military Educational Institutions, scientific consultant, and military consultant to the General Inspection Group of the USSR Ministry of Defense. He retired from the military in 1960.

Honors and Awards

Sharokhin received numerous awards for his service, including three Orders of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Suvorov 1st Class, the Order of Bogdan Khmelnitsky 1st Class, the Order of Kutuzov 2nd Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals. He also received foreign orders.
