Biography of Michala Petri
Early Life and CareerMichala Petri was born on July 7, 1958, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She grew up in a musical family, with her father being a pianist and her mother playing the violin. Petri started playing the recorder at the age of three and made her first radio appearance in Denmark when she was just five years old. In 1969, at the age of eleven, she made her debut in front of a wide audience at the Tivoli Concert Hall.
Educational Background
Petri received her education at the University of Music and Drama in Hannover, Germany, studying under Ferdinand Conrad. Her mother, Hanna Petri, had studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, while her brother, David Petri, became a cellist and received the Danish Young Musician of the Year Award in 1978. Together, they formed "The Petri Trio."
Recording Career
In 1979, Petri signed an exclusive contract with Philips Records, which lasted until 1987. Today, she records on the RCA Red Seal label. Petri has released 44 albums throughout her career, featuring a wide range of repertoire from the baroque era to contemporary compositions written specifically for her. She has collaborated with renowned composers such as Malcolm Arnold, Gordon Jacob, Richard Harvey, Daniel Börtz, Erik Haumann, Michael Berkeley, Ezra Laderman, Thomas Koppel, Gary Kulesha, Asger Lund Christiansen, and Miklos Maros.
Collaborations and Achievements
Petri often collaborates with her husband, guitarist and lutenist Lars Hannibal, with whom she has recorded several albums. She is particularly interested in the combination of the recorder and guitar, and has recorded with leading classical guitarists such as Göran Söllscher, Kazuhito Yamashita, and Manuel Barrueco. One of her notable projects includes two albums of Bach and Handel sonatas recorded with American musician Keith Jarrett on the harpsichord.
Throughout her career, Petri has performed with prestigious orchestras including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, led by Israeli violinist Pinchas Zuckerman.
Awards and Philanthropy
Michala Petri has received numerous awards and accolades over the years, including multiple German Echo Disc Awards, the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, and the Wilhelm Hansen Music Prize. She is also the Vice President of the Danish Society for Fighting Cancer and a member of the UNICEF Denmark Council.
Personal Life
Petri resides near the northern coast of Copenhagen with her husband and their two daughters, Agnete and Amalie.
