Early Life and Musical EducationRobert Aitken began his musical journey as a teenager, playing in various major orchestras, including the Vancouver Symphony, where he holds the distinction of being its youngest-ever flautist. He studied the flute under renowned masters such as Nicolas Fiore, Marcel Moyse, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Andre Jaunet, and Severino Gazzelloni.
Solo Career
In 1971, Aitken embarked on a solo career, collaborating with prestigious symphony orchestras across North America, Europe, and Asia. He has produced over 40 commercial recordings as a solo flautist, showcasing his exceptional artistry and mastery of the instrument.
Collaborations and Artistic Directions
Aitken has held positions with the Vancouver Symphony, CBC Symphony Orchestra, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra. In Toronto, he served as artistic director of the "New Music Concerts" project. He has performed both classical and contemporary works with acclaimed harpist Erica Goodman for "BIS Records."
Composer and Educator
While Aitken's compositional output is relatively small, he is recognized as one of Canada's prominent contemporary composers. His experiences in East Asia have infused his music with unconventional textures and harmonies. Aitken's compositions demonstrate his ability to break free from conventional forms and explore innovative sound effects.
Career Milestones and Recognition
Aitken has taught at the University of Toronto (1960-1975), Shawnigan Summer School of Arts (1972-1982), and the Banff Centre (1985-1989). From 1988 to 2004, he held a professorship at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. In 1993, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. In 2003, he received the National Flute Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
