Biography of Michel Chasles

Introduction

Michel Chasles was a French mathematician, geometrician, and historian of mathematics. He was a member of the Paris Academy of Sciences from 1851 and a foreign member of several other academies, including the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences from 1861. Chasles was recognized as a leading figure in the French geometric school of the mid-19th century.

Early Life and Education

Chasles entered the Polytechnic School in Paris in 1812 after completing his studies at the Lyceum. While studying at the Polytechnic School, he wrote several independent works on geometry, which were published between 1812 and 1815 in the second and third volumes of Gashett's "Correspondance sur l'Ecole Polytechniqua." After graduating from the Polytechnic School in 1814, Chasles withdrew to Chartres, where he spent ten years in seclusion, devoting himself to the study of geometry.

Contributions to Geometry

Chasles made significant contributions to the field of geometry throughout his career. Some of his early works include "Quelques propriétés du triangle, de l’angle trièdre et du tétraèdre, considérés par rapport aux lignes et aux surfaces du second degré" (1828-29), "Premier mémoire sur la transformation des relations métriques des figures" (1829), and "Second mémoire sur la transformation parabolique des relations métriques des figures" (1830). In 1830, he was elected as a corresponding member of the Brussels Academy of Sciences.

One of Chasles' most famous works is "Mémoire de Géométrie sur deux principes généraux de la science, la dualité et l'homographie," which won him a prize and was published in 1837. This work is considered one of the most learned, profound, and original contributions to the history of mathematics.

Chasles also wrote extensively on the history of geometry, including works such as "Les trois livres de porismes d'Euclide, rétablis pour la première fois, d'après la notice et les lemmes de Pappus, et conformément au sentiment de B. Simson sur la forme des énoncés de ces propositions" (1860), which received the Copeland Medal from the Royal Society in 1865.

Other Contributions

In addition to his work in geometry and the history of mathematics, Chasles made contributions to applied mathematics and mechanics. He developed the theory of characteristics, which is now a fundamental part of projective geometry. He also worked on the theory of attraction, publishing papers on the subject such as "Enoncé de deux théorèmes généraux sur l'attraction des corps et la théorie de la chaleur" (1839) and "Nouvelle solution du problème de l'attraction d'un ellipsoïde hétérogène sur un point extérieur" (1847).

Chasles taught at the Polytechnic School in Paris from 1841 to 1850, where he taught subjects such as machinery, geodesy, geography, and navigation. He was involved in the reformation and improvement of the school during this time.

Later Life and Recognition

Chasles was elected as a full member of the Paris Academy of Sciences in 1851, and in 1861, he became a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He was also a member of the London Royal Society and the academies of Brussels, Berlin, Turin, Naples, Rome des Lincei, Bologna, Stockholm, and many others.

Chasles' extensive personal library, consisting of 3936 titles, provided him with a wealth of material for his scholarly and historical works. In 1881, his library was sold at an auction.

Michel Chasles' contributions to geometry, mechanics, and the history of mathematics earned him great recognition. His discoveries and theories played a significant role in the development of geometry during his lifetime and continue to have an important impact on the field today.
