In Lithonia, Georgia, at the "Natural Nails" salon, a plus-size customer was charged an additional $5 fee due to her weight. The incident left 40-year-old Michelle Fonville feeling humiliated and shocked.
Discovering the Discrepancy
While waiting for her polish to dry, Fonville reviewed the salon's price list and noticed the discrepancy. Believing it to be an error, she inquired about the additional charge.
Cold-Hearted Explanation
To her dismay, the staff coldly explained that the extra $5 was due to her weight, as the salon's chairs had a weight limit of 200 pounds and cost $2,500 to repair. However, the total cost of her services was only $24.
Additional Time Spent
Manager Kim Tan claimed that part of the surcharge was due to the extra time required to service Fonville's nails. Fonville, however, found this explanation unconvincing.
Refund and Ban
After Fonville protested, the salon manager refunded her the $5 but informed her that she was no longer welcome in the salon. Fonville expressed disbelief at the blatant discrimination she had experienced.
