Early Life and Education
Michelle Lujan Grisham, the 32nd Governor of New Mexico, was born in Los Alamos, New Mexico, on October 24, 1959. She attended St. Michael's High School in Santa Fe, graduating in 1977. Lujan Grisham earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Mexico in 1981 and a Juris Doctor degree from the same institution in 1987.
Legal and State Government Career
Lujan Grisham was admitted to the New Mexico Bar and served as the Director of the New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department from 1991 to 2004. She was appointed Secretary of Health for the state in 2004 and served until 2007, when she resigned to run for the U.S. House of Representatives.
U.S. House of Representatives
Lujan Grisham was elected to the House of Representatives in 2012 and represented New Mexico's 1st Congressional District from 2013 until 2018. During her tenure, she served on the House Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs committees.
Governorship
Lujan Grisham defeated Republican candidate Steve Pearce in the 2018 gubernatorial election, making history as the first female Latina governor in the United States. She was sworn into office on January 1, 2019. In September 2019, she announced plans to make public universities in New Mexico tuition-free for state residents.
Family and Personal Life
Lujan Grisham is the granddaughter of Eugene Lujan, the first Latino justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. She is also the niece of former U.S. Representative and Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan and the cousin of current U.S. Representative Ben Ray Lujan. Her husband, Gregory Alan Grisham, passed away in 2004 from a ruptured aneurysm.
