In 1891, Colcord was elected Governor of Nevada. His tenure was marked by a focus on strengthening the state's economy, culminating in the passage of the first statehood bill.

Upon leaving office, Colcord was appointed Superintendent of the Carson City Mint, a position he held from 1898 to 1911.
