Early Life and Political Beginnings

Mieczysław Franciszek Rakowski was born on December 1, 1926, in Kowalewko, Poland. He served in the Polish People's Army from 1945 to 1949. Rakowski began his political career in 1946 as a member of the Polish Workers' Party. He subsequently joined the Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) in 1948, serving as a member of the Central Committee from 1975 to 1990.

Journalist and Editor

Rakowski is renowned for his role as one of the founders and, from 1958 to 1982, the first editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine "Polityka." Under his leadership, "Polityka" became a platform for critical Polish intellectuals. Some still remember Rakowski primarily as a journalist and editor rather than a politician.

Political Transition and Reforms

Rakowski played a pivotal role in Poland's transition from communism to democracy. He served as the penultimate communist Prime Minister from September 1988 to August 1989 and as the final communist First Secretary of the PZPR from July 1989 to January 1990. During his tenure, he initiated significant political reforms and was instrumental in the "Round Table" agreements with the opposition.

Economic Measures and Legacy

Rakowski's government implemented radical market reforms, including the liberalization of prices. He is credited with paving the way for the first semi-free elections on June 4, 1989. Critics, however, point to his involvement in suppressing the activities of the Solidarity trade union.

Regarded as a major figure in modern Polish history, Rakowski died on November 8, 2008, at the age of 81. He passed away from cancer in a Warsaw hospital.
