Miguel Layún: A Mexican Footballing Journey
Early Career and Mexican SuccessMiguel Layún, born as Miguel Ángel Layún Prado, is a Mexican professional footballer of Spanish descent who plays as a right-back for Sevilla and the Mexico national team. He began his youth career with Veracruz and made his senior debut in the Mexican Primera División in 2007.
In 2009, Layún joined Italian club Atalanta. He became the first Mexican to play in Serie A when he debuted against Chievo in 2009. Despite his historic appearance, he faced stiff competition and returned to Mexico on loan to América. There, he made his debut in 2010 and scored his first goal for the club against Toluca. América subsequently acquired his full transfer rights.
European Odyssey
Layún's European journey resumed in 2015 when he joined Granada in Spain. He was immediately loaned to English club Watford, where he made his Championship debut against Huddersfield Town. Layún helped Watford win promotion to the Premier League in 2015 and scored his first goal for the club against Everton.
In the summer of 2015, Layún moved to Porto in Portugal for €6 million. He made his Primeira Liga debut against Arouca and scored his first goal for the club in a Champions League match against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Layún's impressive performances earned him a goal against Roma in the Champions League qualifying rounds, helping Porto qualify for the group stage. He also scored in the group stage against Brugge.
Return to Spain and International Fame
In 2018, Layún joined Sevilla on loan and made his La Liga debut against Eibar. He scored his first goal for the club against Leganés.
International Career
Layún made his international debut for Mexico in 2013 during the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He scored his first goals for the national team in a friendly match against Israel in 2014. He represented Mexico at the 2014 World Cup and was a key member of the team that won the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
