Early Life and Education

Mikhail Fridman was born on April 21, 1964, in Lviv, Ukraine. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, where he studied alongside his cousin, Dmitry Fridman.

Business Career

After graduating, Fridman worked as an engineer at the Elektrostal Plant in the Moscow region from 1986 to 1988. In 1988, he became a private entrepreneur and founded several companies, including Alfa-Foto, Alfa-Eco, and Alfa-Capital.

Alfa-Bank

In 1991, Fridman became the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alfa-Bank. The bank went through a merger with Alfa-Capital in 1998, making Fridman the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the newly formed Alfa-Bank.

Expansion and Diversification

Fridman's business empire extended beyond banking. He became Chairman of the Alfa-Consortium group in 1996. The consortium owns companies in various industries, including retail (Perekrestok) and energy (Sidanko).

Civic and Philanthropic Activities

Russian Jewish Congress

Fridman was a founding member and vice president of the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC), where he led the committee on culture.

Government Roles

Fridman held several positions in the Russian government, including member of the Council on Banking Activities under the Russian government.
