Background and Lineage
Prince Mikhail Rodinovich Kантакузен-Сперанский was born into a distinguished aristocratic family. He was the Director of the Department of Spiritual Affairs of Foreign Confessions and the grandson of Admiral Alexander Frolov-Bagreev and Ekaterina Speranskaya. His great-grandfather was the renowned statesman Count Mikhail Speransky. As the sole male heir to the Velikaya Buromka estate, Mikhail inherited a vast fortune.
Education and Career
Mikhail pursued his legal studies at the University of Novorossiysk, where he earned a Master's degree. In his dissertation, "An Attempt to Define the Concept of Wartime Contraband," he advocated for the codification of international law and the establishment of an international court.
Honors and Nobility
By imperial decree in 1872, Mikhail was granted the title and surname of his great-grandfather, Count Speransky. Henceforth, he became known as Prince Mikhail Rodinovich Kантакузен-Сперанский.
Family and Personal Life
Mikhail married Elizaveta Karlovna Sikar in 1874. She was an intelligent and cultured woman from a prominent French family. They had four children: Mikhail, Boris, Daria, and Sergey. In 1917, the family fled to France, and Elizaveta later passed away in Mozambique.
Children
Mikhail's son Mikhail became a general. Boris, a naval officer, tragically died of a mosquito bite in 1905 while serving in Admiral Rozhdestvensky's squadron. Daria married Count Fyodor Maximilianovich Nirod in 1897. Sergey died in 1953.
Legacy
Mikhail's grandson, Mikhail Sergeevich, wrote "The Saga of the Kантакузен-Сперанskys," a chronicle of the family's history. Mikhail Rodinovich Kантакузен-Сперанский is remembered as a distinguished aristocrat, scholar, and advocate for international cooperation.
