Life and Early Career
Bruce Golding was born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, on December 5, 1947. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of the West Indies, Mona in Kingston.
Political Beginnings
Golding entered politics in the 1970s, initially serving as a member of the National Democratic Movement (NDM). He became the party's leader in 1995 and held the position until 2002.
Minister of Construction
In 1980, Golding was appointed Minister of Construction in the Jamaican government. He held this position until 1989.
Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party
In 2005, Golding was elected leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), replacing Edward Seaga. Under his leadership, the JLP won the 2007 parliamentary elections, defeating the People's National Party (PNP) led by Portia Simpson-Miller.
Prime Ministership
As Prime Minister, Golding held several cabinet positions, including Minister of Defence, Minister of Planning and Development, and Minister of Information and Communication. He also faced challenges during his tenure, including the 2010 Tivoli Gardens incursion.
Resignation and Legacy
In September 2011, Golding announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister in November after the party elected a new leader. He officially stepped down on October 23, 2011, and was succeeded by Andrew Holness.
