Biography of Mikhail Kovalsky
Mikhail Kovalsky is a renowned scientist in the field of operative surgery and topographic anatomy, human anatomy, and experimental morphology. He was born into a family of a well-known Ukrainian neuroanatomist, Professor Pavel Alexeevich Kovalsky.
Education and Early Career
Mikhail Kovalsky graduated with honors from the Medical Faculty of the A.A. Bogomolets Kiev Medical Institute (currently the A.A. Bogomolets National Medical University) in 1972. Following his graduation, he started working as a surgeon at Belotserkovskaya City Hospital from 1972 to 1974.
During this time, Kovalsky pursued his academic career and became an assistant at the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy at the A.A. Bogomolets Kiev Medical Institute. He continued to excel in his field and became an associate professor in 1987. In 1994, he became the head of the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy at the Kiev State Medical University (now the A.A. Bogomolets National Medical University).
Scientific Contributions
From the beginning of his medical studies, Mikhail Kovalsky actively engaged in scientific research. Under the guidance of Professor I.I. Bobrik, he conducted research on morphofunctional changes in the pancreas during experimental pancreatitis and its surgical correction. In 1977, he successfully defended his candidate dissertation on this topic.
Over the course of his career, Kovalsky has made significant contributions to the scientific community. He is a co-author of the textbook "Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy" (1989, 1994), which is recommended by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine for medical students. He has authored more than 300 scientific papers and holds 20 patents for inventions.
Kovalsky has also played an active role in various scientific societies. He served as the scientific secretary and a member of the Presidium of the Scientific Society of Anatomists, Histologists, Embryologists, and Topographic Anatomists of Ukraine. Since 1998, he has held the position of Vice-President of this society.
Teaching and Mentorship
Mikhail Kovalsky has made significant contributions to medical education. He has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Scientific Council of the Medical Faculty No. 1 of the A.A. Bogomolets National Medical University, and the Specialized Academic Council D.26.003.06 (Human Anatomy, Pathological Anatomy, Histology, Cytology, and Embryology) at the A.A. Bogomolets National Medical University.
Kovalsky has mentored 12 candidates and 2 doctors of medical sciences. Among his students are Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor of the Department of Surgery No. 1 at the A.A. Bogomolets National Medical University, A.I. Poida, and Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology No. 2 at the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L. Shupik, A.A. Radomsky, as well as assistants at the Department of Operative Surgery and Topographic Anatomy at the A.A. Bogomolets National Medical University, V.Yu. Ershov, K.A. Prokopets, and others.
Personal Life and Achievements
In addition to his successful scientific career, Mikhail Kovalsky is also a Master of Sport in saber fencing.
Mikhail Kovalsky comes from a family of accomplished academics. His father, Pavel Alexeevich Kovalsky, held a doctorate in biological sciences and was a professor who headed the Department of Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology at Belotserkovsk Agricultural Institute (currently the Belotserkovsk Agricultural Academy named after P.L. Pogrebnyak).
His older brother, Alexander Pavlovich Kovalsky, is a corresponding member of the Academy of Architecture of Ukraine and a professor at the Kiev Art Institute (now the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture).
