Early Life and Education

Nikolai Olegovich Milanov was born on March 4, 1950, in Moscow, Russia, in a family of civil servants. His father, Oleg Vladimirovich Milanov, was born in 1915, and his mother, Evgenia Viktorovna Milanova, was born in 1925. He has one sister, Yuliya Nikolaevna Milanova, who was born in 1975.

Nicolai Milanov's educational journey began in 1967 with his graduation from a specialized high school emphasizing French. He then embarked on his medical studies at the First Moscow Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov, where he enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine. During his time there, he worked as an orderly in the surgical ward of the Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Care and as a paramedic at the ambulance station.

Medical Career and Scientific Research

After completing his medical studies in 1973, Nikolai Milanov joined the clinical residency program in surgery at the Surgery Clinic of the Central Research Laboratory of the 4th Main Directorate of the Ministry of Health of the USSR. He completed his residency in 1975 and subsequently joined the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery in September of the same year as a junior researcher in the Department of Microsurgery.

In 1979, Milanov successfully defended his PhD thesis titled "Microsurgery in the Treatment of Lymphatic Edema of the Lower Extremities." He was then promoted to a senior researcher in the Department of Microsurgery in 1982, the same year he earned the academic title of senior researcher.

Milanov's relentless pursuit of excellence continued in 1984 when he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Postmastectomy Syndrome and its Surgical Treatment." In 1986, he became the Head of the Department of Elective Microsurgery, ascending to the position of Head of the Department of Microsurgery of the Institute in 1988. He was awarded the academic title of Professor of Surgery in 1989.

Nikolai Milanov's administrative trajectory within the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery was marked by his appointment as Deputy Director for Research in 1991, while maintaining his role as Head of the Department of Microsurgery on a voluntary basis. In 1994, he was bestowed the title of Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.

Milanov's contributions to the field of microsurgery were recognized with his election as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (RAMS) in the specialty of "Restorative Microsurgery" in 1997. In the same year, he and his team received the Russian Government Prize for their work titled "Microsurgical Autotransplantation of Organs and Tissues in the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Cancer Patients." He was elected a full member of the RAMS in the specialty of "Microsurgery" in 2000.

Beyond his responsibilities at the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery, Nikolai Milanov also held the position of Head of the Department of Hospital Surgery No. 1 at the Moscow Medical Academy named after I.M. Sechenov starting in 2002. He held this role concurrently with his other positions.

Throughout his career, Milanov's research and practical work have been firmly rooted in the field of microsurgery. As a pioneer in the development of domestic restorative microsurgery, his scientific studies have focused on various aspects of the field, including finger, hand, and limb replantation, microsurgical autotransplantation of revascularized complex tissue complexes, and the application of microsurgical techniques in different surgical specialties.

Contributions to Medical Advancements

Nikolai Milanov's research has resulted in significant contributions to the field of microsurgery. His work has advanced our understanding of the anatomical and functional feasibility of heterotopic finger replantation, and he has developed techniques for replanting large segments of the lower extremities after wheel amputation.

He has also conducted groundbreaking research on the long-term functional outcomes of replantation of large limb segments, leading to innovative methods for reconstructive surgeries on replants using microsurgical autotransplantation of various revascularized tissue complexes.

Milanov's pioneering use of microsurgical autotransplantation techniques has opened up new possibilities for the treatment of congenital, post-traumatic, and iatrogenic deformities in various locations. These techniques have proven effective in treating congenital adactyly of the hand, post-traumatic absence of hand fingers, and replacement of functionally significant anatomical structures (muscles, fragments of bones, tendons, nerves, and vessels) that have been lost due to trauma or surgical treatment.

Nikolai Milanov's research has extended into exploring the feasibility of using revascularized fetal bone brephotransplants derived from fetuses with a gestational age of 16 to 24 weeks. Additionally, he has dedicated extensive efforts to investigating the application of restorative microsurgery in the treatment of both iatrogenic and radiation-induced injuries in various regions of the body.

Organizational Leadership and International Collaboration

Beyond his scientific contributions, Nikolai Milanov has also played a central role in shaping the development of medical organizations and professional societies. In 1990, he became the initiator and first president of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgeons, holding this position until 1994.

In 1994, through his initiative, the Society of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons of Russia was established. Milanov has served as its president since its inception. Under his leadership, the Society was recognized as the official representative of Russia in the International Confederation of Societies of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons.

Nikolai Milanov's contributions to the field have been widely recognized through his election as a member of the N.I. Pirogov Association of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, and the International Society of Angiology. He holds editorial positions on several prestigious journals, including the International European journal "Microsurgery," the Romanian journal "Reconstructive Microsurgery," "Sexology and Sexopathology," "Andrology and Genital Surgery," and "Aesthetic Medicine." Milanov is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Annals of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery."

Awards and Recognition

Nikolai Milanov's remarkable achievements have been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He is the recipient of the Order of Friendship (1998) and the medal "25 Years of Y.A. Gagarin's Space Flight" for a series of experimental works in cosmonautics. He also holds the distinguished title of "Inventor of the USSR."

Personal Life and Interests

Outside of his professional pursuits, Nikolai Milanov enjoys a well-rounded personal life. He is an avid enthusiast of music and auto racing, and he indulges in the hobby of collecting. He currently resides and continues to work in Moscow.
