Early Life and Education
Pyotr Petrovich Kovalenko was born on February 21, 1919, in the village of Elovka, Saratov Region, Russia. His father, Petr Osipovich Kovalenko (1886-1921), participated in World War I and the Russian Civil War. His mother, Anna Ivanovna Kovalenko (1887-1933), was a housewife.
Medical Career
In 1937, Kovalenko enrolled in the Rostov State Medical Institute, where he excelled academically and received the Stalin Scholarship. He graduated in 1941, during the height of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, as part of the "Fire Graduation."
Military Service
Kovalenko served as a senior physician in the 1121st Rifle Regiment from August 1941 to May 1942. He then commanded a medical battalion in the 335th and 77th Rifle Divisions of the Southern Front from 1942 to 1945. By the end of the war, he had attained the rank of major in the medical service.
Academic Career
Following his honorable discharge in February 1946, Kovalenko returned to the Rostov State Medical Institute. He completed his residency in general surgery and worked as an assistant and then associate professor in the Department of Hospital Surgery from 1954 to 1956.
Under the guidance of Professor Z.I. Kartashev, Kovalenko defended his candidate's dissertation on "Preserved Cartilage from Cadavers and Its Use in Reconstructive Surgery" (1951). He subsequently defended his doctoral dissertation on "Application of Chilled and Frozen Bones in Osteoplastic Surgery" (1958).
In January 1957, Kovalenko became the head of the Department of General Surgery. In 1961, he became the head of the Department of Hospital Surgery, a position he held for over 30 years. From 1991 to the present, he has worked as a professor in the Department of Hospital Surgery.
Surgical Contributions
Kovalenko has performed over 20,000 surgical operations throughout his career. He is known as a multi-profile surgeon, skilled in performing operations on the organs of the chest (lungs, heart, aorta, esophagus), organs of the abdomen (liver, pancreas, stomach, intestines), and extremities (transplantation of bones, joints, cartilage, etc.). He developed innovative surgical techniques for creating new vaginas and bile ducts from intestinal segments while preserving their communicative functions.
Transplantation Pioneer
Kovalenko was one of the first surgeons in the USSR to organize a regional tissue bank in 1957. The tissue bank provided donor tissues to hospitals in the Rostov Region and throughout the North Caucasus. He also played a pivotal role in the development of a "Collector Lyophilizer" for freezing and dehydrating donor tissues.
Educational Leadership
Kovalenko has been a dedicated educator throughout his career. He was the rector of the Rostov State Medical Institute from 1959 to 1963. He also served as a visiting professor in Romania, East Germany, and other countries, demonstrating and sharing his surgical techniques.
Scientific Publications
Kovalenko is the author of over 500 scientific articles and 17 monographs. His publications focus on clinical and experimental research in the areas of reconstructive and restorative surgery, as well as transplantation of donor organs and tissues. He is the editor of 22 scientific collections that have been published in Rostov-on-Don.

Kovalenko is married to Evgenia Mikhailovna Kovalenko (born 1919), who served as a therapist in the Great Patriotic War. They have two daughters: Lyudmila Petrovna Kovalenko (born 1943), an ophthalmologist, and Anna Petrovna Kovalenko (born 1951), an infectious disease specialist. They have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In his spare time, Kovalenko enjoys gardening and playing chess. He resides and continues to work in Rostov-on-Don.
