Biography of Mikael Kotanyan
Mikael Khachikovich Kotanyan was an Armenian scientific, public, and political figure. He was born on September 1, 1927, in Talin, Armenian SSR, and tragically passed away on October 27, 1999, in Yerevan, Armenia as a result of a terrorist act.
Education and Early Career
In 1950, Kotanyan graduated from Yerevan State University. He obtained a Doctor of Economic Sciences degree in 1972 and became a professor in 1978. In 1986, he was elected as an academician, having been a corresponding member since 1977. After completing his education, Kotanyan initially worked as a financer in the main department of "Armenergo" from 1950 to 1951.
Contributions in Teaching and Publishing
From 1954 to 1960, Kotanyan taught at the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia (CPA). He then served as the chief editor of the journal "Narodnaya Ekonomika Armenii" (People's Economy of Armenia) from 1960 to 1964. Between 1965 and 1972, he was the head of the department, deputy director (1972-1983), and director (1987-1999) of the Institute of Economics at the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. Additionally, from 1954 to 1979, Kotanyan taught at various universities in Yerevan.
Political Engagement and Recognition
In 1992, Kotanyan became a member of the International Union of Economists in Moscow. On May 30, 1999, he was elected as a member of the parliament and served on the standing committee for financial-budgetary, credit, and economic issues. He was also a member of the political council of the National Progressive Alliance.
For his significant contributions to his homeland, Kotanyan was posthumously awarded the Movses Khorenatsi Medal by the President's decree on December 27, 1999.
