Early Life and Education
Born in Britain, Mike Coughlan graduated from Brunel University London in 1981 with a degree in engineering.
Career in Formula 1
Tiga Cars (1981-1984)Coughlan began his career in Formula 1 with Tiga Cars, where he worked as an engineer until 1984.
Lotus (1984-1990)
He then moved to Team Lotus, where he remained until the team's collapse in 1990.
Benetton (1990-1996)
Following Lotus's demise, Coughlan joined the Benetton team.Ferrari (1996-1998)
From 1996 to 1998, he worked at Ferrari, one of the most renowned teams in Formula 1.
Arrows (1998-2002)
Coughlan then spent several years with the Arrows team, from 1998 to 2002.
McLaren-Mercedes (2002-2007)
In 2002, he became the Chief Designer for McLaren-Mercedes, a position he held until 2007.
Controversy and Dismissal
In July 2007, Coughlan was accused of stealing a confidential 800-page document from Ferrari. This led to his dismissal from McLaren-Mercedes.
Post-McLaren Career
Stefan Grand Prix (2009-Present)Since 2009, Coughlan has worked for Stefan Grand Prix, a team founded by Serbian entrepreneur Zoran Stefanovic. The team has been attempting to make its debut in Formula 1 since 2011.
