Biography of Mike Harrington
Mike Harrington is a programmer and one of the co-founders of Valve Software, a company that specializes in the development of computer games. Alongside Gabe Newell, Harrington helped establish Valve in 1996.
Role in Half-Life
One of Valve's most well-known products is the game "Half-Life," which became a major hit and a phenomenon in the industry. Harrington served as the lead programmer for Half-Life and admitted that he worked on the game tirelessly, even living in the office during the final weeks of development. His dedication to the project was so intense that he even grew a beard in the process.
The entire development team faced constant pressure during those last few weeks, and it was only when all the final preparations were complete - the artwork, sound effects, and levels - that the developers realized how physically and emotionally drained they had become. Harrington fixed the last remaining bugs and tested Half-Life before its market release. Even after the official completion, the programmers continued to test the game's online version.
Later on, Half-Life received the title of "Game of the Year" and was recognized as the "Best PC Game of All Time" by PC Magazine Gamer. The success of the game was unexpected as the development team consisted mostly of novices with no prior experience in creating computer games. Half-Life's success was primarily due to its immersive nature, allowing players to observe the game from the beginning, listen to dialogues, and engage with the storyline. The game felt incredibly dynamic, and its intelligent enemies shocked gamers at the time.
Partnership with Gabe Newell and Post-Valve Career
Harrington's partnership with Gabe Newell continued until 2000 when he decided to leave Valve. He returned to the industry in 2006, founding the company "Picnik," with his former colleague Darrin Massena. In March 2010, Picnik was acquired by Google.
