Biography of Mike Krzyzewski

Mike Krzyzewski, a former American basketball player, is now a basketball coach. As the coach of the United States national team, he has brought several international gold medals to his country. However, Mike is best known for his work with the Duke University team, where he has been coaching for an impressive 34 years and shows no signs of leaving anytime soon.

Early Life

Mike Krzyzewski was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Polish-American Catholic parents Emily and William Krzyzewski. His mother's ancestors immigrated from Poland to Keisterville, Pennsylvania, and Mike regularly visited his grandparents there until he was around 10 or 12 years old. These trips were meant to instill a respect for his roots and heritage. He was raised according to the norms of the Catholic Church and attended Catholic schools.

Basketball Career

In 1969, Krzyzewski graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. While preparing for an officer position, he played basketball under the guidance of Bob Knight. Krzyzewski even served as the captain of the army basketball team and led them to a tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where they finished in 4th place. He remained in the army from 1969 to 1974, spending 3 years as the head coach of the Army Material Technical Support Teams.

After leaving the army, Mike became an assistant coach for the Indiana Hoosiers under Bob Knight. After one season, he returned to West Point and became the head coach of the Army Cadets. Under his leadership, the team achieved a record of 73-59 and secured a spot in the new NIT championship. However, Mike found his true home after leaving West Point in 1980. On March 18th, he became the head coach of the Duke University basketball team.

Success with Duke University

It took several seasons for Krzyzewski to rebuild the team, but after the initial period, his players became key figures in the national basketball arena. The Duke University team has made it to the NCAA championship 29 out of the last 30 years, with 19 appearances from 1996 to 2014. In his 34 seasons as the head coach, Krzyzewski has established himself as the most successful active coach in the men's NCAA championships, with a record of 82-25 and an impressive winning percentage of .767.

Under Krzyzewski's guidance, the Duke University team has won 13 NCAA championships, reached the semifinals 11 times, and won the national championship 4 times. On February 13th, 2010, Krzyzewski coached his 1000th game for Duke University, and on March 20th, 2011, he achieved his 900th victory. He became the second of three male coaches in the first division of NCAA basketball to reach this milestone.

National Team Coaching

In addition to coaching Duke University, Krzyzewski has also coached various American national teams. In 1987, his team won a silver medal at the World University Games, and in 1990, they won bronze at the FIBA World Championship and silver at the Goodwill Games. In the 2006 FIBA World Championship, his team won another bronze medal, and in 2007, 2010, and 2014, they won the championship. Krzyzewski's American team also won gold at the 2008 and 2014 Olympics. He was also an assistant coach for the American teams that won the Olympics in 1984 and 1992, the Pan American Games in 1979, and the Tournament of the Americas in 1992.

In February 2013, Krzyzewski announced that he would step down as the head coach of the national team after 7 years of preparation. However, in May, the team announced that he would remain as the head coach until at least 2016.

NBA Opportunities

During his time as the coach of Duke University, Krzyzewski received invitations to work in the NBA at least 5 times. The first invitation came in 1990 after his team made it to the semifinals for the third consecutive time. The Boston Celtics offered him a position, but Krzyzewski confidently declined. As the success of his players continued, more invitations followed. In 2011, he was offered a vacant coaching position with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
