Early Life and Education
Mikhail Nikolaevich Beklemishev was born on September 26, 1858, in the village of Bozheninovo in the Aleskhin district of Tula province. He descended from an ancient Russian lineage.
Naval Career
Beklemishev embarked on a naval career, specializing in submarine shipbuilding. He made significant contributions to the Russian submarine fleet.
Post-Revolutionary Service
In the aftermath of the 1917 Revolution, Beklemishev served in various roles within the newly formed Republic. He held positions as a member of the shipbuilding commission in 1918 and as head of the submarine department of the Naval Forces' Main Shipbuilding Directorate in 1919.
Arrests and Release
Despite his service to the state, Beklemishev faced periods of imprisonment. He was arrested in 1920 by the State Political Directorate (GPU) but was subsequently released. In 1935, he was arrested again, only to be released once more.
Later Career and Retirement
Undeterred by his arrests, Beklemishev continued his work in the field of submarine engineering. He led the submarine division of the Special Technical Bureau of the Scientific and Technical Department of the Supreme Council of National Economy (VSNKh). He also commanded the experimental vessel "Mikula." In 1931, he retired from his naval service.
Death and Legacy
After a life dedicated to his country, Beklemishev passed away on February 18, 1936, in Leningrad. He was buried at the Nikolskoye Cemetery, but his grave has since been lost. His contributions to Russian submarine design and construction earned him five military decorations. His legacy as a pioneer in the field continues to inspire generations of naval engineers.
