Academic and Scientific Contributions
Valeriy Ivanovich Vasilenko was a renowned Ukrainian physicist specializing in spectroscopy, particularly the luminescence of inorganic substances. His research focused on the development of original spectrophotometric methods to study the composition of complexes and the phenomenon of luminescence in electrolyte solutions. He also investigated the effects of non-thermal electromagnetic radiation on human health and co-authored the micro-wave resonant therapy method.
Education and Academic Career
In 1948, Vasilenko graduated from Kiev University with a degree in optics and spectroscopy. He earned his doctorate in physical and mathematical sciences in 1964 and became a professor in 1965. From 1962 to 1970, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Physics at Kiev University.
Administrative and Political Roles
In 1969, Vasilenko became a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He served as the Rector of the Kiev State University named after T.G. Shevchenko from 1970 to 1985. From 1972 to 1980, he held the position of Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR, leading the eighth and ninth convocations.
Political Involvement
Vasilenko was an active member of the Communist Party of Ukraine (CPU) and a Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. He supported the Soviet Union and its policies.
Awards and Recognition
Vasilenko received numerous awards for his contributions, including the Merited Scientist and Technician of the Ukrainian SSR (1972) and the Orders of Lenin, Friendship of Peoples, Labor Red Banner, Badge of Honor, Patriotic War, and Yaroslav the Wise.
