Early Life and Education
Born into a family of scholars, Boris Aleksandrovich Volkov embarked on his academic journey with distinction, graduating with honors from the Leningrad Mining Institute in 1941 as a mining and surveying engineer.
Military Service
During the Great Patriotic War, Volkov served with valor on the Leningrad Front as the head of a military recovery unit. His contributions to the war effort earned him accolades and respect.
Post-War Academic Career
Returning to academia after the war, Volkov pursued postgraduate studies at the Leningrad Mining Institute, completing his doctorate in 1950. He was subsequently appointed associate professor in 1951.
Leadership in Higher Education
Volkov made significant contributions to higher education in the Soviet Union. From 1950 to 1953, he served as associate professor and dean of the mining faculty at the Siberian Metallurgical Institute in Novokuznetsk.
Founding the Perm Polytechnic Institute
In 1953, Volkov was appointed director of the Mining Institute in Perm. Recognizing the region's industrial potential, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Perm Polytechnic Institute (later renamed Perm State Technical University) in 1960, becoming its first rector.
Academic Achievements
Volkov's academic prowess continued to shine throughout his career. In 1968, he was awarded the professorship. He authored numerous scientific papers and textbooks, contributing to the field of mining and surveying.
Political Recognition
Beyond his academic contributions, Volkov served as a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR and a delegate to the 25th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU).
