Early Life and Education
The renowned Kazakh Soviet mining scientist, Professor (1960), Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR (1962), Doctor of Technical Sciences (1972), and Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Kazakh SSR (1971) began his journey in an unspecified year in the Kazakh SSR. As a dedicated member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union since 1938, he laid the foundation for his illustrious career.
Career in Mining
From 1940 to 1943, the scientist held the esteemed positions of shift supervisor and mine superintendent at the Dzhezkazgan mine. His expertise in mine management was further honed as he assumed the role of head of mine management at the Dzhezkazgan Flour Mill Complex from 1943 to 1952.
Academic Leadership and Research
In 1952, he was appointed Rector of the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute, where he served until 1962. During his tenure, he simultaneously held the positions of Academic Secretary of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR and head of the Laboratory of Geophysical Research Methods at the Institute of Mining of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. From 1965 onwards, he chaired the Department of KazPTI.
Contributions to Mining Science
Professor Baykonurov's groundbreaking research made significant advancements in the field of underground mining. His work focused on continuous underground development of mineral deposits, seismic safety of mine workings, investigation of the physical and mechanical properties of rocks, and general classification of mineral deposit development. He also explored the challenges of complex mechanization in chamber mining systems.
Authorship and Recognition
As a prolific author, Professor Baykonurov published over 300 scientific papers, including 15 monographs. His contributions to the field earned him the prestigious Order of Lenin, as well as numerous other orders and medals. The legacy of his academic and scientific achievements continues to inspire future generations of mining engineers and geologists.
