Early Life and Education
Petro Hryshchenko was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine on June 12, 1899. He completed his secondary education at the 3rd Kharkiv Boys' Gymnasium. In 1917, he enrolled at the Kharkiv University, pursuing a degree in the physical and mathematical sciences.
Military Service and Early Career
During his university studies, Hryshchenko also served as a lecturer for the People's Education and Railway Trade Union courses. From 1920 to 1922, he served in the Red Army.
In 1922, after completing his military service, Hryshchenko became a geobotanical specialist at the People's Commissariat of Agriculture of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1923 to 1926, he studied as an aspirant in the botany department of the Kharkiv Institute of Public Education.
Academic and Research Career
From 1927 to 1930, Hryshchenko worked as a researcher in the botany department of the Ukrainian SSR's People's Commissariat of Education. In 1931, he joined the Institute of Applied Botany, where he headed the department of wild plants until 1938.
From 1938 to 1941, he was a senior researcher at the Institute of Botany of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences. During World War II, he served as the head of the department of higher plants at the Institute's relocated facilities in Ufa and Moscow.
In 1943, Hryshchenko was appointed professor of plant systematics and geography and geobotany. He became the head of the department of systematics of higher plants at the Institute of Botany of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences in the same year, a position he held until 1972.
Recognition and Awards
Hryshchenko received numerous accolades for his contributions to botany. In 1951, he was awarded the Stalin Prize. In 1967, he was named a Merited Scientist of the Bashkir ASSR. In 1969, he was recognized with the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR.
Later Years
From 1972 to 1978, Hryshchenko continued his research as a senior researcher-consultant at the Institute of Botany of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences. He dedicated his life to studying the flora of Ukraine, the Caucasus, Siberia, the Urals, and other regions of Russia. Petro Hryshchenko passed away on September 10, 1982 in Kyiv, Ukraine.
