Early Life and Military Service
Nikolai Zherebtsov was born in 1752 to General-Anshef Alexander Grigorievich Zherebtsov and Maria Mikhailovna Naryshkina. He began his military career in 1770 as an infantryman in the Phanagoria Grenadier Regiment.
Suppression of the Kościuszko Uprising
In 1794, Zherebtsov played a significant role in suppressing the Kościuszko Uprising in Poland. Leading the Phanagoria Grenadier Regiment, he fought valiantly against the insurgents. On January 1, 1795, he was awarded the Order of St. George (3rd Class) for his exceptional courage and leadership.
Promotion and Command of the Fanaogria Regiment
Zherebtsov's accomplishments earned him rapid promotions. In 1796, he was promoted to Brigadier, and on May 10, 1797, he became a Major General. He was appointed as the Chief of the Phanagoria Regiment, which was renamed in his honor.
Dutch Expedition and Tragic Demise
On May 24, 1798, Zherebtsov was promoted to Lieutenant General. In 1799, his regiment was assigned to General Hermann's corps, which was dispatched to Holland to join forces with the British. During the Battle of Geertruidenberg on September 8, the Phanagoria Regiment engaged in fierce combat with the French. While pursuing the enemy through a forest towards Bergen, Zherebtsov was ambushed and killed. His name was removed from the military rolls on September 27, 1799.
Legacy and Family
Nikolai Zherebtsov's distinguished military career was cut short by his untimely death. He was a skilled and courageous commander, who left a lasting legacy in the annals of Russian military history. Zherebtsov's elder brothers, Aleksey and Alexander, also achieved notable positions in the military and government. The latter married Olga Zubova, a prominent figure in the court of Catherine the Great.
