Biography of Milan Kucan
Milan Kucan was born in 1941. He received his legal education at the University of Ljubljana. He was a member of the Union of Communists and later became the leader of the Party of Democratic Reforms after the breakup of Yugoslavia. In 1992, he became the first president of independent Slovenia. He was re-elected to this position five years later.
President of Slovenia
As the president of Slovenia, Milan Kucan was highly honored when his country was chosen as the location for the historic meeting between Vladimir Putin and George Bush during the "turning of the globe" at the White House. The Russian-American summit took place on June 16th in the town of Brdo-koz-Kranj, located 20 kilometers from Ljubljana. The meeting was held in an ancient palace that was once occupied by representatives of the Karageorgevich royal dynasty and later by Marshal Tito after the war.
Kucan expressed his gratitude to the local press, stating that "the fact that the Russian-American meeting is taking place in Slovenia is a recognition of our country, including its contribution to reducing tension in the Balkans. It is also a great opportunity to showcase our achievements to the world." Slovenia, with its developed and stable economy, is seriously considering joining the European Union. Plans for joining NATO are also being discussed.
