Miles Alexander Teller was born on February 20, 1987, in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, USA. He is the third child in his family, with two older sisters, Erin and Dana. Teller has Russian-Jewish roots from his father's side, as well as English, Irish, French, and Polish roots.
During his childhood, Teller often had to change places of residence due to his father's work as a nuclear power plant engineer. It was in high school that Teller began to study music, learning to play the saxophone, drums, guitar, and piano. In 2007, Teller and two friends participated in a music festival in Connecticut. On their way back, they were involved in a car accident that left Teller with 30 staples in his injured shoulder and two metal plates in his skull.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Teller also excelled in sports, particularly baseball. However, he ultimately chose a different path and focused on his passion for acting. Teller was the president of his high school drama club and went on to study at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2009.
