Birth and Early Life
Mimis Plessas was born in Athens on October 12, 1924. His musical talent manifested early on, and during his school years, he became the first piano soloist on Greek radio.
Musical Career
In 1952, Plessas embarked on a professional career in music composition. From 1956 onwards, he excelled as a conductor and composer. Notable works include operettas, the ballet suite "Athenian Panorama," and the operas "Orpheus and Eurydice" (1998) and "Zeus."
Film and Theater
Plessas had a prolific career writing music for film and theater. He composed over 104 film scores and 70 theatrical productions. His collaborations with renowned Greek performers, such as Giannis Poulopoulos, Marinella, Nana Mouskouri, Antonis Remos, Tolis Voskopoulos, and Stratos Dionysiou, further established his reputation.
Discography and Awards
Plessas' album "Σ` αγαπώ," released in 1969 with lyrics by Lefteris Papadopoulos, became a sensation in Greek discography, selling over a million copies. He received numerous gold and platinum awards throughout his career.
International Recognition
Beyond Greece, Plessas gained international acclaim. He was awarded prizes in Barcelona (1960), Warsaw (1962), Belgium (1963), Italy (Monte Alto, 1964), the USA (1965), Paris (1968), and Tokyo (1970).
Honors and Legacy
Plessas received the Gold Medal of the City of Athens in 2000 and the Golden Cross of the Order of the Phoenix from the President of Greece in 2001. In 2004, he was honored as "Man of the Year" for his contributions to world culture.
